꼬똥 드 툴레아는 마다가스카르의 국견으로 16세기 해적들과 함께 툴레아(Tulear)라는 항구도시에 유입되었다. 원종은 같은 마다가스카르 원산의 견종인 코통 드 레위니옹(Coton de Reunion)이다.

한 때는 왕실 개로 우표가 발행되어 평민들은 키울 수 없을만큼 귀족들의 사랑을 받았다고 한다.

1970년 프랑스켄넬클럽, 1972년 국제애견연맹, 2014년 AKC(American Kennel Club) 아메리칸 켄넬 클럽(미국 애견 협회)에서 179번째 품종으로 등록되었다.

꼬똥의 유년시절을 보면 목화솜 같은 올화이트 컬러부터 화이트 바탕에 크림포인트,그레이포인트, 브라운포인트 등 두가지 이상의 색을 띠는 것도 볼 수 있다. 성장하면서 백화현상으로 인해 컬러들이 밝아지는 것을 볼 수 있으며 아주 진한 색을 제외하곤 대부분은 밝게 변한다.

다리가 짧고 뭉툭하며 체고에 비해 체장의 길이가 길다.
머즐의 길이는 짧지도 길지도 않은 중간형태로 육안으론 털에 가려져 대부분 짧아 보이는 형태이다.

유분기가 없어 사람에게 알러지반응을 일으키지 않기 때문에 강아지 털 알레르기 있는 사람들에게도 적합한 견종이다.

다른 견종과의 친화력이 좋은 편이며 어린 아이들과도 잘 어울린다는 평가를 받을 만큼 유순한 성격을 지니고 있다. 낯선 이에게 경계심이 적고 짖음 수준도 낮아서 실내에서 반려하기에 적합한 강아지로 많은 관심을 받고 있다.

하지만 주인에 대한 애정도가 높은 나머지 어렸을 때 필요한 교육을 해주지 않으면 분리불안증이 생길 수 있기 때문에 분양 받을 때 자세한 설명을 듣고 혼자 있는 시간을 지켜주는 것이 좋다.

꼬똥 드 툴레아에게 가장 중요한 관리는 체중 조절과 귀청소이다. 관절을 위해 무리한 운동보단 가벼운 산책이나 수영을 추천한다. 최소 1주일에 한번 정도는 귀에 이물질을 제거해주고 귀세정제로 깨끗하게 청소해주어야 한다.

꼬똥의 털관리는 어렵지 않다. 털빠짐이 적기 때문에 무엇보다 규칙적인 빗질이 가장 중요하며 핀 브러쉬나 콤을 이용해 털이 엉키지 않게만 해준다면 목욕도 한달 기준 2회만으로도 충분하다. 털엔 유분기가 없어 알러지반응이 없기 때문에 냄새도 나지 않는다.

The Coton de tulear is originally from Madagascar, and is also known as the “Royal Dog of Madagascar”.

The Coton named for the seaport of Tulear were once the preferred lapdog of the nobels of Madagascar. The AKC registered its first Cotons de Tulear in 2014.

When it is a puppy, the Coton comes in three accepted colors; white, cream (sometimes with tan markings; and brown) and white, gray and white. As it grow up, it is will be brighten up its puppy coat colors. Then, the Coton’s coat should be white but may also have tan or cream(and gray) point on their ears and body.

The Coton has short legs and long coat. Its stop looks short so it is covered by hair.
They are suitable for people who are allergic to dog hair because they have no oil in hair.

The Coton is friendly and can make an excellent family dog with children.
As well as happy-go-lucky, these dogs are inteligent, lively, playful, and very social.

Of a happy temperament, stable, very sociable with humans, and with other dogs.
The temperament of the Coton de tulear is one of the main characteristics of the breed.1.
But from a young-age, they need education to prevent separation anxiety.

The Coton de Tulear has remained fairly free of genetic health issues.
That is not to say that they do not exist, but that any incidences are of an extremely low percentage.

But They need to cotrol their weight and take care of their ears.
A couple of times a week, check the ears and remove any excess hair.
They have coat that requires regularly brushing and combing almost daily and bathing.
